Uses
• Antioxidation for oils and oil-containing foods: It can prevent edible oils, fried foods, biscuits, instant noodles, etc. from becoming rancid and deteriorating due to oxidation, extend the shelf life of products, and maintain the flavor and quality of foods. For example, in the production of fried potato chips, adding BHA can inhibit the oxidation of oils and prevent the chips from developing a rancid smell.
• Antioxidation for food packaging materials: Added to food packaging materials, it can slowly release to the surface of the food, protecting the food from oxidative damage. It is especially suitable for foods sensitive to oil oxidation such as nuts and meat products.
• Applications in cosmetics and pharmaceuticals: In cosmetics, it can prevent the oxidation of oil components and maintain the stability and color of products. In pharmaceuticals, it can protect pharmaceutical preparations containing oil or easily oxidizable components from deterioration.
Key Characteristics
• Strong Antioxidant Property: BHA has a high antioxidant capacity. It can effectively capture free radicals generated during the oxidation of oils, interrupt the oxidative chain reaction, and thus delay the oxidative rancidity of oils and oil-containing foods.
• Good Thermal Stability: During the food processing, it can withstand relatively high temperatures without decomposition and can play an antioxidant role under high-temperature conditions such as frying and baking. For example, in fried foods, BHA can remain stable in hot oil and continuously protect the oil from oxidation.
• Relatively High Safety: When used within the specified range and limit, BHA is considered a safe food additive. It can be metabolized and excreted from the human body, and generally does not pose a hazard to human health.
• Good Solubility: BHA is easily soluble in oils and organic solvents and can be uniformly dispersed in the oil phase of foods. It has a good affinity with oils, so as to better exert its antioxidant effect.
• Synergistic Effect: When used in combination with other antioxidants such as butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT) and propyl gallate (PG), it has a synergistic effect, which can significantly improve the antioxidant effect and reduce the usage amount of a single antioxidant.
